Detroit, Mich — With their first-round pick, eighth overall, the Red Wings select Marco Kasper in the 2022 NHL Draft. The Austrian center played in Sweden this past season, scoring seven goals and four assists in 46 games.

Kasper earned 13 points (six goals) in 12 games while playing for Rogel’s (Sweden) junior team and took home six points in 13 games during his playoff run.

Steve Yzerman, was named Detroit’s General Manager in 2019, is in his fourth straight year of picking European players. The Wings needed a blue-chip center prospect, and the competitive 18-year-old can help Detroit find its fire again.

“I want to be in every game,” said Kasper. “That helps you win.”

“I’m really honored. I’m thankful for the opportunity and I’m going to do my best to get to the NHL as soon as possible and help the Detroit Red Wings win,” added Kasper.

The 6’1 center is headed to Detroit to be a part of development camp this week.

“I’m really excited, for sure,” said Kasper. “There’s a great hockey culture there.”

Kasper is the first pick among Detroit’s 10 total picks in this year’s draft. The Red Wings next pick comes in the second round at 40th overall.
