Young Wildcats team ready to bring the intensity this season

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena varsity boys soccer coach Tim Storch had one of his best seasons last year. The Wildcats finished with a 17-5-2 record. Those 17 wins is now a new program record in a single season. However, it wasn’t the way Storch and the Wildcats wanted their season to end. Last year, Alpena fell short to Gaylord in the district final game, losing 2-1.

Now, Storch is ready to turn the page with almost a completely different team. “It’s a big challenge,” said Storch. “There will be some bumps along the way. However, I want these guys to reach the highest potential they have as a team.”

Four players are returning to the squad, including striker Mike Clark and goalie Matt Diamond. Despite losing 11 starters from last year, this young team is ready to play to their full potential and they’re also ready for a challenge.

“This is a new team, which is like a new fresh mindset,” said Clark. “This is a hardworking team and it’s very encouraging.”

“This team works really well,” said Diamond. “We have pretty good chemistry and it’s only going to build throughout the season.”

Alpena’s first game is Thursday as they will host Harbor Springs. Game time is at 5 p.m.
