Au Gres-Sims Wolverines Prepare for 2023 Season

The Au Gres-Sims Wolverines had an excellent season in 2022, finishing with an 8–2 record but a heartbreaking loss in the postseason to Morrice, a loss that stays with them to this day. The wolverines have a photo in their locker room of Morrice hoisting the trophy.

“We lost on a Saturday and Monday we had most of our team in the weight room all winter, all summer, they’re focused,” said Head Coach Brian Sanchez. “They’re ready to play.”

The Wolverines come into the season with a new running back, as one of their top rushers, Keegan Bender, departs. They plan on shifting things from a ground and pound attack to a more balanced approach.

“So far we’re looking good, we’re starting to break it in,” said junior quarterback Carter Zeien. “I think we got the right players in the right spots to make that stuff work, and I think it can be pretty good.”

With a healthy mix of upperclassmen leaders and underclassmen talent, the Wolverines are looking to build off of a strong 2022 with an even better 2023.

“You have to just spend time with each other,” said senior lineman Andrew Sabin. “Have fun, go out with each other, get used to each other, and try and set the tone with everybody, try and not let anybody get in their own head.”

The Wolverines will hold a scrimmage on Thursday as they prep for the regular season, hoping to clean things up before it gets real.

“We get out to the scrimmage and we’re going to see three or four different teams and be able to get out there, open our offense, taking a look at some of the defensive changes that we’ve made, look at personnel and see what you’ve got,” said Sanchez. “You get into a game situation like this, and it’s like Christmas. You get to see what you’ve got.”

The Au Gres–Sims Wolverines will begin the season at home next Friday against the Atlanta Huskies.
