Several state fireworks tragedies — Alpena reports no known incidents

ALEPNA, Mich. – The Fourth of July is over, but the lasting effects from recent fire work incidents in the state is a reminder to use proper safety precautions.

Sunday 24–year–old NHL player Matis Kevlinex died in Novi after he was hit in the chest by fireworks .

And a 56 year–old Wolverine Fireworks Display worker – the same company who Alpena hires for the city’s fire works, lost a leg in a separate accident over the weekend.

Alpena Fire Marshal Andy Marceau said while these incidents are tragic, he’s happy to report good news for the county.

“What we know from July third, fourth and fifth that we know of Alpena County did not have any fireworks accidents that we transported by ambulance,” said Marceau. “There could’ve been some simple burns or something that maybe walked into the ER, but the ambulance service did not have any.”

Marceau said that he and the fire department worked closely with the fireworks company to make sure every detail up until the fire works show was done safely.

“We know exactly what they’re bringing in and how big of shells, and the morning of the 4th of July I arrive down there when the fireworks arrive,” said Marceau. “So, the crew comes in they setup the tubes, and then the fireworks come and they off load them then I periodically check on them throughout the day to ask them “How’s it going,” “What’s going on,” and make sure everything’s going as planned and make sure they’re doing everything safely.”

Marceau said for people still trying to light fireworks this summer, to keep them away from crowds and not to relight used fireworks.
