July 9 Bagley Street Bridge update

ALPENA, Mich. – Work continues on the Bagley Street Bridge.

If you’re in the area and can see down Bagley Street, you’ll notice that the old bridge is completely gone.

Piers one and five are keeping workers busy this week. Staff is also working to demolish abutment B.

Road commission manager Ryan Brege said these broad terms can get confusing so he offers more detail.

“Abutments are the outer ends of the bridge that the beam sits on,” said Brege. “So, on the shore side, the south side is abutment A, on the north side is abutment B which they’re currently working on demolishing the old one and reconstructing the new one. So that’s where the end of the beam sits. In the river are what are called piers.”

Fun fact: The construction of the old Bagley Street Bridge costs close to 400 thousand dollars in 1976.

The costs for reconstruction in 2021— 1.9 million dollars!
