Women File Lawsuit After Staying At Airbnb Allegedly Infested With Bats

Eight women visited Alpena this summer for a high school reunion and were left in fear as they discovered bats in their Airbnb rental.

They filed a suit on Monday at the Alpena County Circuit Court alleging that Airbnb allowed an infested home to be advertised on their platform and that the homeowner did not practice proper maintenance to the home.

The group stayed in the rental, called “The Castle” for multiple days without problems until bats were seen in the turret room. Once the first bat had made its presence known, they allegedly saw more throughout the night.

Detroit attorney Jonathon Marko is representing the women and described the stay as “a scene from a horror movie.” The complaint also said an exterminator visited the property and determined that evidence of a long term infestation had been present.

However, the property owner said only one bat was found and apologized for the incident. He responded to the renter’s negative review on the platform saying it was “incredibly random and unfortunate to begin with.”

The listing is no longer available on Airbnb.
