Warm Saturday with periods of showers and sun

High temperatures today reached 79 degrees in Alpena, but got up to 88 degrees in Saginaw, Mich., and 87 degrees in Chicago. A light breeze from the southwest will help transport these waremer temperatures into our area Saturday.

Rare phenomenon: The forecast from the National Hurricane Center is calling for two tropical systems to co-exist in the Gulf of Mexico early next week.

1. Tropical Storm Laura formed well east of the Leeward Islands and is heading toward Puerto Rico. Laura will track over the Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic this weekend. After that, it is expected to end up somewhere in the eastern half of the Gulf of Mexico and strengthen to a category 1 hurricane.

2. A tropical depression located southeast of Mexico is forecast to strengthen and become Tropical Storm Marco. It will then track to the northwest and it’s expected to strengthen to a category 1 hurricane, heading towards the Texas Gulf Coast.

Around Northeast Michigan — Saturday: A chance of spotty showers/thunderstorms in the late-morning and afternoon. Early morning temperatures will start in the lower 60s. Afternoon highs will reach about 85 degrees. Early-evening temperatures will be near 80 degrees.

Sunday: A chance of spotty showers/thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Predawn lows will be in the lower 60s. Afternoon highs will be close to 81 degrees. Early-evening temperatures will be in the lower/middle 70s.

Monday: A mix of sun and clouds. Early-morning temperatures will be in the lower 60s. Afternoon highs will be around 82 degrees. Early-evening temperatures will be in the middle 70s.
