Onaway wins battle of the Cardinals versus Johannesburg-Lewiston

ONAWAY — Johannesburg-Lewiston and Onaway’s girls basketball teams fought it out in a Ski Valley Conference showdown. Joberg (6-1) entered with a second place 4-0 conference record, while Onaway (4-3) entered the night in fourth with a 3-2 Ski Valley record.

Johannesburg jumped out to a 12-3 lead after the first quarter as Tara Madej led the way with 6. Onaway found some life in the second, scoring ten and holding Joberg to 3 points, though they would still trail 15-13 heading to halftime.

Onaway came to life in the third frame, scoring 16 and holding Johannesburg to only four points. Both teams played their best offense in the fourth quarter, but Onaway came away with the 48-33 victory over Johannesburg.

The rivalry game became very physical, especially in the fourth quarter. Joberg fouled trying to get the ball back throughout the fourth, but ended up losing 3 players to foul-outs and 1 to an ejection. Onaway head coach John George also received a technical for arguing a call in the fourth. The teams have a rematch on February 22nd.
