Mio softball and Alcona baseball advance to regionals

Mio, Mich. — The Mio Thunderbolts and Au Gres-Sims Wolverines took the district final softball game to the ninth. The Wolverines had the early 4-1 lead in the fourth when Marlee Walker hit an RBI double with two outs. Defensive errors allowed the Thunderbolts to add two runs to the board. Mio would go on to defeat Au Gres-Sims 5-4. Pitcher Lauren Kuffel delivered 20 strikeouts. Up next, Mio faces Kingston on Saturday, June 8th at 12 p.m. in Genesee.

The Alcona Tigers were looking for their first district title since 2017, and they topped Au Gres-Sims 13-3. Zach stephenson went 3-for-3 at bat with two RBI’s. Jacob Sytek, Jon Surgener, Antavius Mikazes and Gavin Walker contributed two hits each. Pitcher Josh Kilbourn threw a complete game throwing seven strikeouts. Up next, Alcona faces Marlette on Wednesday, June 5th at 4 p.m. in Mio.
