Michigan DNR reports 96 percent capacity at state parks and campgrounds

ALPENA, Mich. – Privately owned and state run camp sites had a successful 4thof July holiday.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reported 96 percent occupancy at state parks and campgrounds.

Local campgrounds were booked weeks in advance.

Privately owned camp grounds in the area sat they too saw an uptick.

Mark Hall of Camper’s Cove in Alpena said the pandemic definitely helped with the increase in visitors.

“It usually is a busy time,” said Camper’s Cove Owner Mark Hall. “This year, maybe even a little more after COVID people really wanted to get out and have more of a normal 4thof July. Last year we were able to open by that time, but it was definitely a different year, this year was more traditional.”

The DNR said this uptick was predicted as state parks and campground were around 95 percent capacity during Memorial Day too.
