Wildcats lose heartbreaker to Gaylord

Alpena's Maddie Voltz scored 18 points in loss against Gaylord.

Alpena, Mich. — The Alpena Wildcats hosted the Gaylord Blue Devils, a team the green and white had already defeated on the road. The bigs stepped up for the Wildcats in this game. Jade Schultz put up 9 points of her 15 total in the second quarter to give Alpena the 22-17 halftime lead.

The Wildcats had a sizable lead in the third until Gaylord made three back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap. Then, Senior Maddie Voltz stepped up down low. Anna Young kept feeding Voltz the ball and she put up 8 points in the fourth quarter. Tied at 46 with less than 20 seconds to go, Schultz came up with the block and Gaylord gained possesion. The Blue Devils needed three passes before junior Savanna Gapinski drove through the paint and made the acrobatic layup for the 48 to 46 lead with 9 seconds to go.

Alpena’s Alysa Funk missed her jumper, and Gaylord’s Rylee Harding recovered the rebound. Anna Young was there on defense, and Harding slipped out of bounds. Wildcats gained possession with one second to go. Abigail Funk inbounded to Schultz who threw up the shot, but it bounced off the glass and rim and it was no good. Gaylord defeated Alpena 48 to 46.

Up next, Alpena hosts Traverse City Central on Friday, March 1st at 5 p.m. for their last regular season game.
