Oscoda earns share of Big Dipper title on record breaking night

The Oscoda Owls earn a share of the Big Dipper title for the first time since 1991.

Oscoda, Mich. — The Oscoda Owls entered Friday nights matchup against Whittemore-Prescott with more than a win on the line. The blue and white had a chance to earn their 17th regular season win, tying a school record, and clinching a share of the Big Dipper title for the first time since 1991. On top of that, Oscoda held senior, parent and homecoming night. Plus, sophomore Owen Franklin and junior Brayden Mallak had a chance to break individual school records. A lot was on the line.

Franklin needed four three-pointers to break the all-time school record of 66 set by Josh Wilson (1998-2000). He started off hot knocking down two back-to-back threes in the first quarter. The sophomore knocked down another triple in the first, but waited until the third to make Oscoda history off of a Mallak assist. The junior broke the school’s assist record of 243 that was set by Kevin Smith (2002-04).

Overall the entire Owls’s squad knocked down points. Junior Devin Thomas dropped three 3-pointers and the Owls won 61-39 improving to (17-0) overall. The Owl’s celebrated their Big Dipper title with t-shirts and by cutting down the basketball net.
