Alpena sweeps TC West with seventh inning RBI single walk-off

Both Alpena softball and baseball can clinch the Big North Conference title with a single win on Tuesday in Petoskey.

Alpena, Mich. — The Alpena Wildcats hosted Traverse City West for a softball double-header. This was a hard fought Big North Conference battle. In game one, Alpena’s early lead in the third inning helped secure the 6-4 win. The Titans tried to make a late comeback, but with bases loaded Alpena ended the game on a double-play. In the third, Meghan Roznowski, Aubree Sheldon and Dayna LaBell contributed RBI’s.

Game two was another fight to the finish. The Titans had the lead 4-1, but the Wildcats clawed back. Junior Lilly Lewis relieved Emma Fraser on the mound in the seventh, and she rolled past three batters straight.

Down 4-3, this matchup came down to the bottom of the seventh. Abbie Funk started off the action with a high pop up down the third baseline that dropped fair for an RBI double. Allie DeRocher made it home tying this one up at four. Then, senior Alma Scots signee Fraser was the next batter up. She hit a grounder through the gap for the walk-off RBI single 5-4 victory.

The Wildcats are now (6-0) in the Big North Conference, the best in the league. Up next, Alpena travels to Boyne City on Wednesday. The first pitch starts at 4 p.m.
