‘The Foster Closet’ in Alpena Seeks Donations, Volunteers

In the past week, The Foster Closet of Northern Michigan posted on social media that they were looking for financial donations and volunteers.

They are a nonprofit organization that provides clothing, toys, and other necessities for children of foster families.

“When a foster family is placed with a child, they may need a crib, or one month it was baby monitors was the big thing, and so we don’t have them here, so we’ll go either on buy, sell, trade and try to find a good used one, or we’ll just go to the store and purchase a new one for them, so one month we purchased four baby monitors,” said Amy DeRosia, a board member for The Foster Closet of Northern Michigan.

The Foster Closet is located in a small spot near the bowling alley in Alpena, a spot they’ve been for roughly half a decade.

Now, rent is due, and they’re looking for help to make ends meet. Some members of the community have stepped up to help them out.

“We had posted on the Facebook page just in the last week that we were in need, and our community is awesome and usually steps up to help us out when that happens and we super appreciate that, and so we did just recently get a couple monetary donations,” said DeRosia.

The Foster Closet is an organization that enjoys going above and beyond for foster families in northeast Michigan, and will do whatever it takes for them to get by.

“When you get called for a placement instead of going to have to purchase everything new, you can contact the Foster Closet, and we do a lot by appointment only, especially right now in the summer when it’s busy, but you contact us, we’ll make a time that works for you,” said DeRosia. “Someone will meet you here, and you can see what items we have that you may need, and we can help you out with things that we don’t have. It’s an awesome resource for foster families.”

The Foster Closet asks people to not bring things to be donated that they were planning on throwing out.
