Teachers prepare for the 2022-2023 APS school year

ALPENA, MI. –  Families are rushing to get the last minute supplies needed for the first day of school. However, for Second Grade teacher, Theresa Honecker, her planning started weeks ago.

Ms. Honecker says making the initial connection with new students is important. The support from classroom parents and staff is what makes it all possible.

“I have a lot of parents support and I know I will have it this year. We are really a team.” Honecker said.
Ella White Principal, Tom Berriman, said that a team mentality is what allows the staff to best meet the needs of the students.

“It is not just reading and writing. It is about the child’s physical and mental health. We want them to leave feeling loved and accepted.” said Berriman.

This year will bring many new faces to greet students as APS has been busy bringing in 51 new employees including 32 new teachers. Students and families at Ella White will return to a new modern playground, with enhanced security throughout the building.
