TBNMS to Host Freshwater Acidification Research Lecture

Madelyn Saddler, a student at Northern Michigan University, is hosting a lecture at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to discuss a freshwater acidification research project.

The research project is funded by the Michigan Sea Grant. The lecture takes place on July 27th and doors open at 6:30 pm. Saddler will begin speaking at 7 pm.

Saddler will touch on several topics, including what freshwater acidification is, its implications on Lake Huron, and how community members can get involved.

Saddler has collected water samples that were sent to the University of Michigan to be studied, and she will discuss that process as well.

The lecture is free to attend, and people will have the opportunity to experience up close the water sampling process that saddler conducts as part of her research.

“Some of the potential implications for freshwater acidification are its harmful effects for marine species like fish, and kind of hindering their ability to grow and reproduce and all that type of stuff,” said Saddler.

Saddler wants the community to come out and learn what people can do to help the maritime life in their own backyard.

“That’s a huge bonus for me, to be able to share my kind of role in all of this, but also the sanctuary’s role, and the community’s role as well,” she said.
