Showers continue until midday Wednesday

A low pressure system parked over the state is generating moisture and instability. That has led to showers and thunderstorms breaking out this afternoon and continuing into evening. A stationary boundary extends west of this low pressure system. Waves of moisture are traveling along a path just north of this boundary. Rounds of showers will move from west to east across our area overnight through midday Wednesday.

The stationary boundary and the warm front farther east are dividing much warmer temperatures from cooler temperatures found over Northern Michigan. Highs Tuesday got up to 41 degrees in Houghton, Michigan and 57 degrees in Alpena. Compare that to summer-like heat south of the boundary, where temperatures warmed to 76 degrees in Saginaw, Michigan and 86 degrees in Chicago.

Showers are expected Wednesday morning and midday. Drier air will move in late-day Wednesday, so Wednesday evening to Thursday afternoon is looking dry. Most of Thursday will remain dry, then a brief chance of showers will arrive Thursday evening. Friday’s forecast looks completely dry with sunshine.

Wednesday: Showers predawn to midday, then drying out. Early-morning temperatures will begin close to 40 degrees. Afternoon highs will get up to around 51 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the upper/middle 40s.

Thursday: Likely dry and mainly cloudy during the morning and afternoon. A chance of showers will move in for the evening hours. Predawn lows will cool to about 38 degrees. Afternoon highs will reach close to 58 degrees. Evening temperatures will head from the middle 50s to upper 40s.

Friday: Mostly sunny, cool and windy. Predawn temperatures will drop to the middle 30s. Afternoon highs will be near 50 degrees. Evening temperatures will go into the middle/lower 40s.
