Live Grenade Found and Removed from Alcona County Home

In a press release sent out on Tuesday, the Alcona County Sheriff’s office said they, along with Michigan State Police, were able to remove a live grenade from a home in Haynes Township.

They were called to the home on January 11 by a man who was cleaning out his father’s garage when he found two hand grenades in a metal ammo can. One of them had been cored out and was unusable but the other was live and intact. One of the responding deputies was able to identify what kind it was and said it has a explosive range of approximately 100 meters or about 328 feet. The Michigan State Police bomb squad later showed up to take it away and explode it in a designated safe location.

According to MSP Lt. Derrick Carroll, finding things like this is not uncommon as many World War II veterans would bring them back from the war. He adds if anyone comes across a situation like this, do not get close to it and call the police.
