Great Conjunction in Dec 21 night sky

ALPENA, Mich. — Jupiter and Saturn were observable in the night sky on Dec. 21 and they were closer to each other than they had been for nearly 800 years.

The phenomena called the Great Conjunction happens once every two decades, when the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn align with each other. While the planets are observable once every twenty years, they have not been as close as they were this year since 1226.

From some areas and perspectives, the two planets were close enough to appear overlapping- like a double planet. While the conjunction is over, the planets may be visible with the naked eye for the rest of December.
