Aging can lead to severe health problems and complications, but exercising can lead to longevity and increase the likelihood of maintaining cognitive and motor skills. The Alpena Senior Citizens Center helps keep senior citizens and people of various ages active with fun and engaging workouts that help build and retain muscles.

“I teach exercise class here at the senior center, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We start at 10 and end around 11ish,” said Bj Sander the program manager and exercise instructor of the Alpena Senior Citizens Center.

Each fitness class consists of various workouts such as stretching, weightlifting, squatting and the well known game of Hokey Pokey. This class allows participants to have the option to work out while sitting down in a chair or standing up.

“I can go up and down stairs more and it’s easier to get in and out of chairs,” said Denise Mitchell a participant who attends the class regularly.

Seniors who have attended the class have already recognized significant physical improvements since attending.

“I think it’s doing a lot of good keeping muscles I didn’t know I had hiding active and it’s just a lot of fun too,” said Hilda Ghiatam another participant who attends the fitness class regularly.

The Alpena Senior Citizen Center welcomes people of all ages to attend their classes to enhance their overall health and wellness.  If you want to attend a fitness class or keep up to date on activities taking place at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center, you can call their office at 989-356-3585 to learn more.
