Alpena Tallies Eight Goals in the Second Period to Roll Past Cheboygan

ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Wildcats brought the momentum from two wins in the North/South Showcase last weekend to their home ice. Alpena (10-8) rolling on Wednesday night in a 10-1 win over Cheboygan (3-10) marking it as their third straight victory.

The Chiefs got on the board first as Ethan Shepard capitalized on a scoring opportunity to make it 1-0 in the first period. Alpena quickly responded as Garrett Hamp found the back of the net to even the game at 1-1. The Wildcats wasted no time as Ethan Walker scored just 26 seconds later to give Alpena the 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.

The Wildcats seemingly had a boost of energy in the second period. Only 30 seconds into the period, Luke Miller found Anthony Thompson who buried a shot to make it 3-1. Joe LaCross extended Alpena’s lead on an unassisted score to put the Wildcats up 4-1. The team later capitalized on a power play opportunity when Thompson went top shelf tallying up another goal to make it 5-1.

Just a minute and a half later, Bryce Moe extended Alpena’s lead to 6-1 with an unassisted goal. Midway through the second, Walker added another power play score to tally his second score of the game making it 7-1. About a minute and a half later, Preston Schuldt scored on an assist from Gus Wirgau and Gavin Winterstein bringing it to a 8-1 lead. Alpena took a 9-1 lead only 45 seconds later when Michael Kreis found the back of the net. The Wildcats racked up their eighth goal of the game with a score by Brody Misiak as the mercy rule took place.

The Wildcats get a short break before hosting the Gaylord Blue Devils (3-10) on January 19 at 6 p.m.
