Wildcats Put On Strong Performance in Loss to St. Edward

ALPENA, MI – The Wildcats hockey team kicked off their annual Blue Line Christmas Showcase on Wednesday night. Alpena welcomed in the No. 2 team in the state of Ohio better known as the St. Edward Eagles.

Coming off a Big North Conference loss, the Wildcats looked much improved against the 11-time Ohio state champion Eagles. Although the effort didn’t go unnoticed, Alpena fell by a final score of 7-2 against St. Edward. Dylan Vidmar got the scoring going in the first period for the Eagles with a power play goal. Only a few seconds later, Geoffrey Lapsevich tallied another score for St. Edward making it 2-0 to finish the first period.

Alpena was able to trim the deficit early in the second period. Preston Schuldt capitalized on a power play opportunity from near the blue line to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1. St. Edward quickly responded with a goal of their own to make it a 3-1 game. Vidmar tacked on another goal making it 4-1 for the Eagles after two periods.

With two strong periods under the Wildcats’ belt, the Eagles began to run away in the third period. George Blaskovic pushed St. Edward’s lead to 6-2 and Lapsevich recorded a hat trick for the final goal of the game.

The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Eisenhower.
