Tips on preventing cyberattacks

ALPENA, Mich. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security together with other entities has declared October as National Cybersecurity Awareness month.

Over the last month there have been more than a dozen public schools who have fallen victim to a cyberattack.  Hackers released documents that contained students grades as well as documents containing social security numbers and other sensitive information.  In addition to schools falling victim, public institutions, hospitals, and local governments have also suffered cyberattacks.

According to Alpena Public School Principal, Thomas Berriman, they haven’t had any issues with cyberattacks, but Berriman said they are taking precautions so it doesn’t happen.

According to DHS, many businesses are struggling to recover financially from the COVID–19 pandemic and a cyberattack could cripple their operations forcing them to close.
