Last Friday March 22nd, the APlex had its annual Special Need prom. The theme was Hollywood nights and everything was decorated with a Hollywood sign, posters of popular movies and a red carpet to portray the Hollywood atmosphere.

“We hosted our annual special needs prom event at the APlex, we have spent many months and hours prepping for this event. Tonight’s theme was Hollywood, everybody came, they danced, they ate, had a good time, we just partied hard tonight” said Amanda Roznowki, who was on decoration committee for the event.

There was a catered dinner and a diverse assortment of desserts to choose from. After everyone finished eating, the festivities on the dance floor began.

“My favorite part of tonight was seeing all their faces as they walked in and seeing all the decorations lit up for them, I think that’s the best part” said Roznowski.

“Watching the kids smile and have a great time, doing something for the less fortunate children” said Craig Hazen, an Alpena resident who brought his daughter Amanda to the prom.

Goodie bags were given out to those in attendance at the prom and a brand new bike was given away in a raffle drawing. The special needs prom really helped bring the community together and was a fun experience for all ages who attended. Roznowski says they’re doing it again next year and the theme they selected is the 50’s.

Roznowski says they’re always looking for donations and more volunteers to help put the prom together. If interested in helping out with the next special needs prom, you can stop by the APlex for more info.
