The Benefits of Line Dancing at the APlex

You’ve probably seen ladies dancing in a line wherever there is music in Alpena.

Chances are they’re taking Anna Lewis’ line dancing class, something she’s taught for 14 years in Alpena now.

“I was doing it for about a year, and one of the girls that was doing it, I was taking it two nights a week, and the one that was doing the easy class didn’t want to do it anymore,” said Lewis. “I loved it so much I thought, ‘I’ll try and do it,’ and so I’ve been doing it for about 14 years.”

There is a small fee for the class, but Lewis says there’s no pressure to commit to attending every week. All dancing skill levels are welcome, no matter how good or bad someone thinks they are.

“They can stay as long as they like and do as much of it as they feel comfortable doing, and they don’t have to commit to coming on a regular basis,” said Lewis. “Some just drop in when they have time, so it works out great.”

Dancing has several benefits. It can keep people in good physical shape, but it also has mental benefits as well.

“They have done several studies where they’ve shown it is one of the best things for dementia, to avoid dementia, and they say it’s not just the fact that you’re learning all the different patterns and moving your body in different ways than you normally would, but it’s even the social part of it, is a big part,” said Lewis.
