ALPENA, Mich. — People on social media donated thousands to their local shelters this week in honor of actor and animal–lover Betty White. Here in Alpena, the Second Chance Animal Shelter has received $5,000 and counting since Monday.
Treasurer Leanne Bloom told WBKB the money was a welcome morale boost while the group prepares their building for its grand opening.
Bloom said they plan on using the money for a big item on their wishlist.
“We got together and said ‘You know what? What could we use?’ And we decided on a showcase kennel to feature some of our harder-to-adopt animals. Or some of the older ones. That would be a real tribute to [Betty White].
Even people from as far as Florida donated to the shelter.
Bloom said this endeavor wouldn’t be possible without community support. She hopes to see everyone at the grand opening this spring.
If you want to chip in, you can donate on their fundraiser page.
