Scholarship recipient shares what it means to her

ROGERS CITY, Mich. — The Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan (CFNEM)  awarded scholarships to more than 300 students this year.  158 awards totaling $272,600 were awarded to students in Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties.

18–year–old Mackenzie Bruning of Rogers City applied for several scholarships and received four.  She has plans to complete ACC’s nursing program and become a nurse practitioner.  Bruning said the scholarship means so much to her because it is the Elaine Smith scholarship, who was also the doctor that delivered her when she was born.

Executive Director Laurie Nugent said many scholarships are not just determined by academic achievement.  She adds that every single scholarship has a story and legacy of the donor.

Bruning provided some advice for other students.  She said no matter what, keep applying and don’t give up.
