Historic Pilot’s son to tell his story

OSCODA, Mich. — If you’re a history buff, you may want to visit Oscoda this Friday.

The Wurtsmith Air Musuem will host Gary Powers Jr. on Friday, July 23.

You may know his father as the U2 spy plane pilot shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960. He returned to the US through a spy exchange in West Germany, a story Steven Spielberg portrayed in his movie “Bridge of Spies.” Powers will talk about his father’s time in captivity and the stigma he faced when he came home.

Rick Hawn, a director at Wurtsmith, says the cold war connection is why powers chose to visit.

The Museum capped attendance at 300 people.
