Ossineke scout is first girl to achieve Eagle rank in her troop

ALPENA, Mich. — The Ossineke Scouts BSA leadership celebrated a historic moment for their troop Saturday.

At 1 PM on Saturday, Emily Weiss officially received her Eagle Scout badge, making her the first young woman to attain the honor in Troop 79.

She originally camped with the Venture Scouts during her early teens. However, when Weiss heard the official decision allowing girls to join the Scouts BSA, she wanted in.

Just two years ago, she transferred over and started at the bottom.

Weiss told WBKB that to her, being an Eagle Scout means seeking excellence.

“It means that I have high standards for myself. If I don’t have high standards for myself, what am I trying to achieve in life?”

Weiss said being a girl in the Boy Scouts made her something of an outsider. There were even times she wanted to quit. She thanks her mentor, scoutmaster Skuse, for all his support.

What’s next on Weiss’s list?

She says she has her sights on an accounting degree.
