New Preschool in Harrisville is Thriving

A new preschool recently opened in Harrisville housed within Alcona Elementary School. “We partnered with Head Start NEMCSA, the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency, to add an additional preschool in the building here in the building at Alcona,” said Timothy Lee, Alcona Elementary School principal. “We’ve always had a head start class but it’s been in a separate building, so there’s been enough need for our preschoolers to upon up a separate classroom, and we had a space available in the building, so they are housed here in the elementary.”

Despite only being open for a month, they already have a full class. “So far it’s been very well,” said Lee. “The staff has been very welcoming accommodating, the students have been receiving it well. So they have a full class of 18 students and they’re doing well. It’s managing the hallway, interacting with some of the other nuances to the building and the logistical, but so far it’s been a very positive asset and addition.”

Finding available childcare in Northeast Michigan can be a challenge; so Principal Lee encourages anyone interested in preschool or childcare to reach out to the schools for guidance and support. “They filled up, so it definitely was a need,” said Lee. “We noticed there was a high need for preschool and support for our kids so we are glad to provide that opportunity.”
