Mental health first aid comes to Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. — A public health education program teaching mental health first aid took place at First Presbyterian Church Monday night.  Partners in Prevention prepares participants to recognize individuals struggling with mental health concerns.

They are not taught to diagnose people but to talk about the different signs and symptoms they might see in individuals.

Program Coordinator Mary Schalk said participants learn when something is minor, an immediate threat, or needs intervention.  She said they learn through various role plays and looking at different scenarios.

The program lasts for two days and is four hours each day.  Schalk hopes the program gives participants confidence to approach struggling friends and family.

Courses are offered in Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties.
