Man Creates Super Mario Snow Sculptures in Alpena

Driving down Werth Road in Alpena, you may have seen these snow sculptures recently that look like Super Mario characters.

Kurt Dziesinski is the artist behind the sculptures, and he’s taken advantage of the last couple big snowstorms in Alpena in order to create them. He packs the snow tight together and carves them in shapes of Mario himself as well as the mushrooms. Dziesinski used ceramic paint for the sculptures and had to use a ladder to sculpt the Mario figure, as he says it is almost ten feet tall. His inspiration was wanting to put smiles on people’s faces.

“I just want to spread some light and cheer, and put a smile on kid’s faces,” said Dziesinski. “Mario is just, him coming out of there is so cool, and I just wanted to put it from paper to reality on a huge scale maybe.”

Dziesinski says it’s a physically straining activity, but appreciates people stopping by and enjoying the art.

“It feels like I’ve been run over by a bus and then they back over me, you know, actually,” he said. “But it’s all worth it. I’ve used muscles I haven’t used in a long time. It’s good fitness, it’s good cardio, it’s just healthy, and it’s healthy for the community.”

Dziesinski says he has another idea for a new sculpture soon, but can’t yet reveal what it is.
