Local career and volunteer opportunities

ALPENA, Mich. — For those looking to serve the community through career or volunteer opportunities,  a new partnership between North Central Michigan College and the Alpena Fire Department is making that possible.

The partnership will address the statewide shortage of EMS workers.

Fire Chief Bill Forbush said EMS education is not typically available in rural areas because of the limited demand.  He said since 1980 they have run a 24–hour full–time  paramedic service for Alpena.  Forbush added the partnership between the city and county works well but there are issues.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, there are over 500 EMS job openings.
