ALPENA, Mich– Saturday’s snow buried a lot of our cars. While clearing it all off is a chore, the Michigan State Police reminds us it’s crucial for road safety.

The Michigan Vehicle Code prohibits drivers from dumping snow in a way that obstructs other drivers’ views. We often do that when piled–up snow blows off the roofs of our cars. This is why we clean the snow off our vehicles: to make the roads safe for everyone.

Keeping others safe also means having a full view of the road. MSP Lieutenant Derrick Carroll says you should clear off as much of your car as you can, including the side windows, to get the safest view.

“A lot of people we see going down the might remove a portion of the snow— just enough so they can see out— but that has to be removed across the windshield. Your defroster has to be working as far as there’s no fog the inside. You have to have a clear view.”

Carroll recommends preparing for work earlier so you have more time to clear off your car. He adds now is also a good time to check your wiper blades. The last thing you want during a snowy drive is a broken set of wipers. Clearing your car also has helps you avoid a fine or ticket for posing a risk to other drivers.
