Hog Show at the Alpena County Fair

The rain started to come in, but it did not stop the Hog Show at the Alpena County Fair on Monday.

Contestants began showing off their hogs at 5pm in the tented area, as a crowd watched and enjoyed the show. Hailey Lucas took home Senior Showmanship, Showman of Showman, and finished top five in Market Class.

“I just try and do better than I did for myself the previous year, so instead of trying to compete against other kids in the arena, I try and imagine competing against myself last year to improve my skills more and more every single year,” she said.

Lucas spends a large amount of time bonding and caring for her pig Libby, a process she says takes several hours each week.

“I’d go in the barn, call her name, and she jumps up and comes to her name, so just lots of little details to get her comfortable with me and know that I’m not going to hurt her,” she said.

For Lucas, being out at the Alpena County Fair is the highlight of her summer.

“I get to see my friends that I don’t necessarily get to see in school and continue to build on my friendships that I’ve had for years, and I love coming here and seeing the hard work other people put into their animals and seeing the competition I’ve got makes me excited for next year, always,” she said.

The Alpena County Fair continues throughout the week at the Alpena County Fairgrounds and concludes on Saturday, August 19th.
