With the help of Hillman Fire Department, Hillman Emergency Service and the Montmorency County Sheriff’s office, Hillman high school was able to create an emulated car crash scene. This emulation was part of their traffic safety campaign made possible with money they won fro the strive for a safer drive campaign.

“We got, we actually won a thousand dollars to perform a safe driving campaign for our whole school and we just wanted to show everybody how crazy it is and how impactful it is for that to happen in your community” said Aubrie Klein, a Hillman high school SLS member.

The campaign was student led and students posed as the drunk offenders and accident victims. The slogan they adopted for the campaign is “Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself”

“We really wanted to target youth and not only youth, we also wanted to target the adults too in our community so it could be like a whole community learning experience’ said Gretchen Weiland, another Hillman high school, SLS member.

After the emulation concluded, there was an assembly with guest speakers from the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department and Beck Funeral Home.

“I hope that they learned how just important it is to stay off the roads when you’re drinking and please just don’t drink. It’s not worth it at all and it’s very impactful for it to happen in your own community” said Klein.

“And I feel like a lot of the teenagers that are driving now and they are going to parties they don’t really realize the consequence of their actions until it actually happens so witnessing and having our classmates be the victim of it I think really made an impact on our youth” said Weiland.

Hillman high school is turning this emulation into a video for their campaign to try and win the opportunity to present it for other Michigan schools.
