Hillman Basketball’s Trenton Taratuta Named WBKB’s Athlete of the Week

HILLMAN, MI – If you’re a basketball fan living in Northeastern Michigan, it’s likely that you’ve heard about Trenton Taratuta. WBKB Sports visited Hillman High School to feature the basketball star as our Athlete of the Week.

Every athlete that joins their high school team has high aspirations for themselves and whether they reach those goals is simply up to them. Every once in awhile, a special player comes along with those same high hopes and exceeds every one of them. Not only does Taratuta break records, he’s rewritten the Hillman basketball history book. “I’ve been really fortunate to coach a lot of good basketball players,” said Head Coach Eric Muszynski. “One thing that sticks out with him is his work ethic.”

The senior guard entered the season with 1,612 career points. Averaging over 30 points per game, he quickly reached Hillman’s all-time scoring record. Taratuta has 1,928 points and turns his focus on reaching 2,000. He will join 45 others in MHSAA boys basketball history when he reaches the milestone. “It felt great breaking the all-time scoring record,” said Taratuta. “I just felt the love from the whole community and it was a special night for sure.”

For the past 19 years, Hillman has been led by Muszynski who was a scoring star at Alpena High School in 1998. Despite his personal accolades, the most rewarding aspects of his coaching career has been watching Taratuta grow on and off the court. “This is what we’d like to have Hillman basketball be all about,” said Muszynski. “He’s definitely a generational guy.”

Aside from his personal accomplishments, the star guard has one more goal this season. The Tigers taking a trip to the Breslin Center on March 16 for the Division 4 Boys Basketball Final.
