All over Harrisville the community is preparing for Christmas, but the Harrisville Depot is especially festive for the season.

Becky Schroeder, co-chair of the Harrisville Depot committee said, “Santa is coming to the Depot this Saturday, December 9th, he’ll be here from one to four, or until the last kid gets to visit and chat with him. We have a little scene set up inside the depot so people can take a look and see what the original construction, what is left of the original construction, and how much work we have left to do.”Bringing your own camera is required if you are planning on taking a picture with Santa, and there will be plenty more to the event outside of Saint Nick.

The event will have hot cocoa and candy canes and will also be raising money for the restoration of the depot.“We’ll have bake sale items, craft items, lots of little train toys for the kids if you need stocking stuffers, train related especially,” said Schroeder. They will also be hosting a raffle for a quilt donated from the White Pine Quilt Guild.

Along with classic Christmas decor, visitors can also take a glimpse back in time seeing vintage toys that would’ve been popular while the station was in service. Schroeder and her team hope to continue its legacy as an event space for the community. “Not only do we want to restore this beautiful, historical building so it can be of use to the community, we’d like to expand outside,” said Schroeder, “add a pavilion, parking lot, gazebo, maybe even a train car or two that we can convert to kitchen facilities or a chuck wagon.”

After visitors check out the depot, the arts council is hosting a Christmas tree lighting on Main Street by the water starting at 5 p.m. with hot cocoa and a bonfire to wrap up the evening.
