Lansing, Mich — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is requesting that federal employees impacted by the partial government shutdown become eligible for government assistance.
Whitmer sent a letter to Labor Secretary Alex Acosta on Friday, asking him to waive current eligibility requirements for unemployment compensation.
The new governor says employees working without pay should not have to risk losing their homes or their ability to support their families due to shutdown, which is now in its 31st day.
