Golden Apples Scholarship Program Actively Seeking Recipients In Alpena

The Golden Apples Scholarship program is seeking to recruit high school seniors and college sophomores for their teacher program. The program will assist students in becoming future teachers.

“The Golden Apple scholars program recruits high school seniors through sophomores in college. We support them all the way through their undergrad and these are Michigan residents who go to college and universities and commit to teaching” said Alan Mather, President of Golden Apple Foundation.

Applications for the program opened up in January and there have already been 90 applicants so far. The foundation is hoping to recruit more students in the northern lower region of Michigan.

“What we do is, after we recruit them and they enroll in college, we provide academic and social emotional support, but we also bring them together every summer on college campuses across the state. We pay them and in addition to paying them, we also give them support from Michigan teachers. We find great teachers in Michigan K-12 teachers who are gonna help prepare them for what it’s like when they go in the classroom.”said Mather

The Golden Apple Scholars program includes a summer program called Scholar Institute. The first summer you’re enrolled, the duration is approximately a week to a week and a half and you receive a $2,000 stipend. You get an additional $500 every summer.

“We support them with mentors for their first 2-3 years. After 5 years of teaching in a Michigan school, they earn their crystal apple. So once they become golden apple scholar, they’re with us for about 10 years” said Mather.

If you apply for the program by February 20th, your application is given higher priority and could result in earlier admittance. The official deadline to apply is April 1st.
