Game of the Week: Rogers City Visits Alcona With Conference Implications

The Rogers City Hurons will be in Alcona this Friday taking on the Tigers, a matchup between two teams vying for the Big Dipper Conference title.

Both teams are undefeated in the conference. The Tigers are coming off a win against previously undefeated Au–Gres Sims, but they’re turning their attention to the Hurons.

“We let our guys know that that win was great, we give it the 24–hour rule, we have 24 hours to have some fun with that win, and then Monday morning we’re right back to the grind,” said Alcona head coach Jason Somers. “I think the guys are staying well–grounded; they’ve got some good leadership here, so I think we’ll be okay.”

Off of two straight victories, the Hurons are aware of the stakes, and they expect the Tigers to bring it.

“This week has huge conference implications,” said Rogers City head coach Jesse Fenstermaker. “If we win this, we have a really good shot at winning the conference. If they win it, then they’ll have it locked up, so I know they’ll be completely focused on us.”

This is a match-up between two coaches who know each other well. Somers and Fenstermaker even played against each other in high school. Both coaches have the utmost respect for each other and each of their programs.

“He’s [Somers] been so focused on winning this game this week,” said Fenstermaker. “He’s got it down to the last letter and he’s just preparing for everything we have.”

“I have a lot of respect for Jesse,” said Somers. “Just to see how he gets his guys up year after year after year, he lost a lot of seniors and things, but he just comes back, reloads, takes advantage of the talent that he has. I think he’s a really good football coach, and I can’t wait to get it on on Friday.”

The 4–3 Rogers City Hurons will travel to Alcona to take on the 6–1 Tigers on Friday, as both teams are looking to remain undefeated in conference play. Kickoff is at 7pm.
