High school football ends in just three weeks. The competition is getting tougher as teams aim for a playoff appearance. WBKB Sports has chosen the battle of Au Gres-Sims and Alcona who are both deserving of a postseason run as our Game of the Week.
The Alcona Tigers have a 5-1 record. Becoming playoff eligible in the off-season, Alcona is a strong contender in the running. Head Coach Jason Somers believes the showdown with the Wolverines is great preparation for the postseason. “This game is one of those playoff type games,” he said. “They know Au Gres is a good team and hopefully meet that challenge.”
On the other hand, the Wolverines are undefeated with a 6-0 record. Despite that, Au Gres-Sims can’t help but question what Alcona might bring to the table. Head Coach Brian Sanchez feels Friday’s game could potentially be a reality check. “Can we handle the adversity?,” he asked. “That we don’t know because we haven’t been challenged yet.”
Additionally, the Wolverines are hosting their very first Military Appreciation game. Au Gres-Sims is extending the invitation to Alcona’s veterans and current service members as well. “Games that recognize people that have sacrificed so much for our country are really great games,” said Somers. “Our veterans from our county get to take part in this is really pretty spectacular.”
The Tigers only took two losses last season. One of those was given to them by the Wolverines. Yet, both teams consider last year’s matchup old news. “Last year to this year is a night and day difference,” said Sanchez. “They’re going to have the same situation.”
Alcona travels to Au Gres-Sims on October 6. Kick off between the Tigers and Wolverines is set for 7 p.m.
