Frigid mornings ahead; Dry Tuesday and Wednesday

While it’s been feeling chilly in Northeast Michigan — just look at the high in Duluth, Minnesota to see what an arctic air mass can really bring! Highs today reached 18 degrees in Alpena, while Duluth, Minnesota had a high of minus 4 degrees. The air mass over our area will remain nearly unchanged for the next few days. So, highs in the upper teens are expected through midweek.

Winds out of the west-southwest have been driving in lake effect snow showers between Charlevoix and Cheboygan. A separate weak system sliding by to the south could contribute just enough moisture for a few flurries tonight. Otherwise, skies dry out Tuesday, giving way to some breaks of sunshine. Any sunshine will not help the ongoing temperature situation.

Forecast lows for the next few mornings will range from near zero to the single digits. It will feel very cold Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday morning with lows below 5 degrees. The coldest of the bunch looks to arrive early Wednesday with lows near zero degrees.

Looking ahead to early Wednesday, wind chills will drop to between minus 5 and minus 10. That’s what it will feel like onto exposed skin when lows near zero degrees are combined with a light breeze.

Tuesday: Mix of sun and clouds. Predawn lows will be near 2 degrees. Afternoon highs will get up to 17 degrees. Evening temperatures will drop below 10 degrees.
