Arctic blast heading into Northeast Michigan this weekend

Winds from the west-southwest are driving lake effect snow from the Traverse City area to the Tip of the Mitt. Most of that lake effect snow is avoiding the Alpena area. We’ll have a chance of a few flurries on Saturday along with some dry periods midday-afternoon.

Winds will come from the west at 15-20 mph Saturday, that’s going to put a bite to the air. Highs will be in the teens, but it will feel colder with the wind chill.

Wind chills will get close to −5 early Saturday. Afternoon wind chills will be between 0 and 5, that’s how it will feel onto exposed skin with the combined effect of cold temperatures and wind. It’s going to feel even colder heading into early Sunday! Wind chills will head down to about −10.

Saturday: Scattered flurries, some dry periods, cold and breezy. Predawn temperatures will drop to 10 degrees (wind chill near −5). Afternoon highs will be near 18 degrees. Evening temperatures will cool to the lower teens.

Sunday: Chance of flurries early, very cold. Predawn lows will be near 6 degrees (wind chill near −10). Afternoon highs will only get to around 14 degrees — that’s nearly 15 degrees below normal! Evening temperatures will go below 10 degrees.

Monday: Mix of sun and clouds then a late chance of flurries, remains frigid. Early-morning temperatures will begin close to 3 degrees. Afternoon highs will reach about 17 degrees. Evening temperatures will head into the lower teens.
