Erik Peterson Wins 56th Annual Alpena City Open

ALPENA, MI- Going into the final round of the City Open at Rivers Edge Golf Club. Erik Peterson has one goal in mind, just get to the back nine.

The back nine at Rivers Edge has always been friendly for Peterson and with a one shot lead heading onto the 10th tee, he needed another solid nine holes. After shooting a two over 38 on the front nine,  Peterson put together a near flawless final nine holes as he carded three birdies and just one bogey as he turned in a second nine 34 to finish even for the day and -2 for the event.  After rolling in a birdie on 18 he was six shots clear of five time champion Tom Lahner.

” The back nine is my nine here on this course.  Last couple of times I have shot 35 and 35. The goal was to get through the front nine at even or one over and make my way to the back,” said Peterson.  The win was his second at the city open, the first coming back in 2010.

It was a solid weekend for Peterson as he got the event started with a first round 70 at Alpena Golf Club.  His -2 under score had him tied at the top with Lahner.  Lahner hung around in round two as a birdie on the par five 13th brought him within two shots of Peterson.  Lahner finished the second round at a six over 76.  At +4 for the weekend Lahner was the solo second place finisher.

Peterson was presented with the newly named David Karschnick trophy.  Karschnick was one of the original founders of the tournament and recently passed away this spring.

The champs flight division was not the only contest taking place on Sunday.  The Senior scratch division needed three playoff holes to determine a winner.  Bob Centala rolled in a 10 foot birdie putt to defeat Albert Skiba on the third playoff hole.

In the Womens flight division, Sydney Silver was crowned the winner shooting 177 over the two days of competition.
