Early education program helping young Michigan children

LANSING, Mich. – An early education program backed by the TED Organization, wants to help young Michigan children.

Waterford Upstart is an in–home, early education program that prepares 4–year–old children for kindergarten.

The program provides positive parent–child interactions along with personalized, online instruction.

Participants in the program also receive a computer and internet at no cost.

Waterford Upstart says evidence shows early learning is an advantage for incoming kindergarten aged kids.

“That first day of school, they have children that are entering all over the place,” said Waterford Upstart Spokesperson Kim Fischer. “Some that are already starting to read others that don’t even have letter recognition. And it makes it harder for those teachers to know who to teach to. And then on top of that, another thing a lot of people don’t think about is confidence. Children recognize on that first day if they’re behind and it affects their confidence.”

The program is free to Michigan families from money through the TED Organization.
