City of Flint reaches water settlement deal

FLINT, Mich. – The Flint City Council voted Tuesday to approve the city’s $20 million dollar share of a massive $641 million dollar settlement for injury claims stemming from the contaminated water crisis that first poisoned citizens in 2014.

The city council voted six to one on its 20–million dollar contribution to the city’s water troubles. The council had until December 31st to decide; only two members abstained.

Councilmen Maurice Davis said his decision was based on the needs of the city.

“It was to protect the city of flint, as well as the residents,” said Davis.

According to Davis the $20 million is an insurance policy to safeguard the city and protect it from any further litigation, as well as add to the pot of money that residents can claim. Davis said the community had been misinformed.

“We was not voting for a settlement of the $600 million,” said Davis. “We was voting for the $20 million piece from our insurance company.”

One council member who abstained said his job as a councilman and the personal impact of the water contamination makes his job that much harder.

“I’m probably one of the only ones that’s a signed–on plaintiff,” said Councilman Eric Mays. “So I’ve got a dual responsibility. ”

According to the council they will continue to educate flint city residents on the agreement terms and update them on the next steps.
Last week a plan was put in place by the Michigan Legislator to borrow $600 million dollars to finance the state’s portion of the proposed agreement.
