Cindy Johnson, Mayor Pro Tem has been elected as the new Mayor of Alpena. There was a celebration to welcome her into her new position, while also serving as a goodbye party to commemorate former Mayor Matt Waligora’s 12 years of service.

“She’s gonna do very well. Cindy’s been around for in local government for longer than I have and with being on the commission for so long and then being elected in her current position, so she’s gonna hit the ground running and she’ll do fine.” said Matt Waligora when asked how he thinks Johnson will do in her new role.

The celebration consisted of an assortment of decadent desserts and numerous people attended to welcome Cindy Johnson into her new position with open arms, while also thanking Waligora for the accomplishments he achieved for Alpena.

“It’s wonderful. I’m pleased to serve the citizens of Alpena. To work with city staff and continue to do the things that we have been doing.” said Cindy Johnson, the new Mayor of Alpena.

The Alpena city council pitched it and awarded Waligora with a key to the city for his 12 years of time and dedication to the people and the city.

“Give me a little grace. It might be a bumpy start, but we’ll get there. It’s different being, a little bit different being Mayor Pro Tem and then taking the helm as mayor, even though I, I’ve done a lot of the things with the mayor, that he’s done. I will get my footing.” said Johnson.

Johnson is excited to continue pursuing projects she’s passionate about such as: pet projects, promoting recycling and pushing forward with the plans for Culligan Plaza. Former Mayor Matt Waliogora says he had a good run and believes that Alpena is in good hands.
