Cigarette causes early morning fire in Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. – The Alpena Fire Department Northside Station responded to a porch of an apartment at 2030 North Bagley Street.

Crews arrived within 4 minutes of dispatch with 6 personnel and the Deputy Chief.

Crews were directed to the apartment of origin and found a small fire on the back deck of the second story apartment that had burned through the deck boards and was extinguished except for embers.

Upon further investigation it was determined that the tenant had discarded a cigarette butt into a plastic flowerpot resting on the deck’s surface approximately 11pm the night before.

There were no injuries reported during the incident.

This was the second fire this weekend that was determined to have started due to the improper disposal and extinguishment of smoking related materials.

Alpena Fire Department would like to encourage those that do smoke to ensure that smoking materials are properly extinguished and disposed of to prevent further threat to life safety and property.
