Chilly Friday, then warmer over the holiday weekend

High temperatures Thursday reached 54 degrees in Alpena, running close to 15 degrees below normal. Detroit got up to 70 degrees while Houghton had a high of only 43 degrees. Winds out of the north continue to bring cold temperatures to our area.

A high pressure system north of the Canadian border is stopping rain from coming farther north. However, areas near and south of M-72 are getting a few showers this evening, that’s the northern extent. This high pressure system will keep Northeast Michigan dry Friday, although we will see a lot of cloud cover. Then clearing will take places Friday night, giving way to bright skies for Saturday.

Friday will remain cold with highs getting up to only the middle 50s. Temperatures will rise to about 60 degrees Saturday, but that’s still several degrees below normal. Once winds shift out of the south, warmer temperatures will move in. Sunday, highs will reach the upper 60s. Temperatures will continue to get warmer on Memorial Day with highs in the lower 70s.
